Motorsport Photography

My name is Dan Lo and I am an aspiring motorsport photographer based in Chicago. I go to as many AMA Superbike, World Superbike, and MotoGP races as my credit limit allows, and maybe a couple more on top of that. Feel free to check out my many attempts at motorsport photography, read about my (mis)adventures on my blog, and/or contact me if you somehow feel inclined to drop me a message. Tommy Aquino - VIR

A CornerSpeedPhoto column by Tommy Aquino

Hey everyone, hope you got a chance to come out to VIR or watch it on TV because it was good, hot racing. Even though it wasn't as hot as last year, Virgina International Raceway is always hot and very humid, translating into a hard weekend for all the riders. Although I did have some family and friends come out, so it wasn't too bad ;) My weekend wasn't the best, but I made the most out of it.

Tommy Aquino leads Saturday's DSB raceSaturday started off with me qualifying 4th for the weekend's races. I was happy with the front row, inside spot. Saturday's race started very sketchy, but very well, creating a lead pack of myself, Cardenas, Eslick, and Fong. We all went back and forth on the brakes. I led a few laps, and they led a few laps. An unfortunate red flag and eventual restart created more riders in the desperate 9 lap sprint for the podium. Near the very end, it was five of us at the front. I was at the rear of the group and unfortunately got caught up with 4th place for too long and couldn't catch up to the podium. So I settled for another 4th place finish on the day (getting tired of those 4ths!). Sunday wasn't the best, starting off with a lowside in practice. There has been so many crashes between all the Yamaha riders this past weekend, that I had to use my backup bike for the race.

Tommy Aquino at VIRSunday's race started well, again at the tail end of the lead pack. But unfortunatley for me again, it started to sprinkle, and the red flags came out. On the restart, I gridded up on the second row and got a fair start. Going into the 4th turn on the restart, a couple riders made slight mistakes and checked up hard going into the turn, leaving me nowhere to go. I hit the guy in front of me just hard enough to lose all my balance and run off the track. From there I had 17 laps to get as many spots as I could. I went from a few seconds off of last place, to 9th at the end. I was pleased, but bummed out that I couldn't fight for a spot on the podium. Goals have been made for the last 2 race weekends, and I plan to follow through with them. Thanks for reading and plan to see me on the box for the rest of the year. Hope you can come and watch! See ya :)
