Being a relative latecomer to the whole AMA scene I admit that Mat Mladin's 7th and last championship run was the only one I've personally witnessed, but my general familiarity with him being a long-time dominant force in the AMA stretched a bit further back. One of my earliest impressions of Mladin was a magazine ad from several years ago. I don't remember what the ad was for or the exact wording of the accompanying blurb but it highlighted Mladin's then 6 championships with something to the effect of "It's tough reaching the top, and even tougher staying there" (feel free to chime in if you know what I'm talking about). Despite missing the bulk of his career, I feel fortunate to have been able to document most of what turned out to be his final year of racing.
