Heartland Park Topeka returned to the AMA calendar for the first time since 1991 with Mat Mladin kicking off the weekend by declaring the track was unsafe and opted not to race. As the weekend progressed, Jamie Hacking, Robertino Pietri, and Chris Clark all eventually followed suit. Then on Saturday dropped the bombshell that Mat Mladin would be retiring from racing at the end of the season. Fortunately for race fans, it all ended up mostly overshadowed by insanely close racing that by Sunday afternoon eventually stole back most of the weekend's headlines.
