Any rider in the top 7 or 8 of last weekends Road Atlanta round would be lying if they said it wasn't one of the wildest races they have been in. At least, that's what it felt like for me. Ridiculous passes, clashing handlebars, and a fast pace, describes my version of the 2010 AMA Road Atlanta round.

My weekend started out perfect, being fastest in all of my sessions leading up to the race including qualifying. Grabbing pole position was great. It was my first AMA pole position, and spirits were high. Race #1 on Saturday got off to a good start, slotting into second place for a few laps. A few passes were made on me and I rode around in 4th for a while. Halfway through the race, I was trying to do my own race and just stay in the middle of the lead pack, but people desperately wanted past me and I found myself back to 7th, and fading. The lead riders were so close together that it was very sketchy to make a pass and not run into the next guy, so I sat and waited. I ran across the finish line with 4 more racers close in front of me, positioning 5th. I was happy, but angry at myself for not taking a few opportunities that were presented throughout the race.

Saturday's race was hard, until I found out what Sunday's race was like. Race 2 at Road Atlanta was one of the more challenging races for me. I started out on pole, and 3rd going into the first turn. I stayed there for a few laps and was 4th until about lap 7. A mistake and an aggressive pass put me back around 8th a little past halfway through the race. 3-4 laps to go, Dane Westby went under Danny Eslick in the last turn and I tried to set them both up for a pass on the front straight. I cut in hard in the last turn and rubbed bodywork with Eslick down the front straight, setting me back a little. The next lap, Dane Westby crashed in the last turn in front of me and gave his position up to me. Further on in that lap, I made a pass on Herrin and Rapp. The last lap I was in 4th behind West and Eslick. I set up West for a pass on the back straight, but Herrin used a double draft to get around us all. Eslick then got me in the last turn, making me come past the finish line in 5th once more.

A hard race, lots of fun, a little unlucky, but at the same time, lucky to be there. I've learned that you have to scare yourself at least 10 times in a race if you really want it, and I suppose some people wanted it a little more than me last weekend. And with that, i will be sure to sharpen up the elbows for Infinion Raceway because I want that podium bad.... And a win wouldn't be too bad either. :P

Oh Auto Club Speedway...

The closest track to my house, yet still farthest from my riding style. Auto Club Speedway has an interesting flow to it that I am slowly acquiring year by year. The 2010 AMA round here in southern California was better than it ever has been for me, but still not as good as I wanted. It was a decent weekend in Fontana, besides the gale force wind on Saturday haha. My weekend started off pretty good though, qualifying 3rd. My first race of the weekend on Saturday was not flawless, but ended up better than last year. I got a good start and stayed in the front pack of riders for a number of laps. I got passed a few times and made a costly mistake, running very deep (off the track technically) in turn 3. I lost a few positions and stayed there until the end of the race, finishing up 6th.

Sunday was a brighter day, even though I ended up the same as Saturday. My final race of the weekend was kicked off with another good start. I stayed in 3rd position for a while then got passed by Steve Rapp and Martin Cardenas. I hung tight in 5th and made a few mistakes and started battling for 5th and 6th position. I was having a good time battling with Dane Westby, but then I got passed and had some issues with lap traffic. Unfortunately, that allowed the front pack to put a few seconds on me, and since the lap times were so close I did not have enough time to recover. So I fought for 5th position with Bobby Fong, and he beat me to it. I ended up 6th on the day, pleased with my riding but not position-wise.

It was a good weekend I suppose considering I went faster than I ever have around that track, and positioned slightly better than last year. Fortunately for me, the rest of the tracks on the 2010 AMA schedule are tracks I really like and I am looking forward to each and every one of them. Mark Miller Interview

Former AMA turned real roads racer Mark Miller talks about racing on tracks vs roads, the Macau GP vs Isle of Man TT, and taking part in the first ever electric-powered TTXGP. All photos in this post are courtesy of Mark Miller, I didn't take any of them.

Dan Lo: How did you get into real-roads racing?

Mark Miller: I was Chuck Graves Yamaha's first AMA rider ever, I even helped put the deal together for Graves and Yamaha way back then when their "new" 1998 R1 was just being introduced and Erion Honda was dominating Formula Xtreme.

Chuck had been doing the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix for some years and asked if I'd be interested in racing the event alongside him. I thought about it, since I was a long-time street squid and canyon racer for years and thought I could give this a try. Road racing on a public road but with no cars, everyone going the same direction, and no idiot highway patrol dorks to mess with us.

So, I said yes and ended up placing 4th that year.

DL: What are the main differences between racing on a track vs a street circuit? Was it difficult making the transition?

MM: The number one thing is you cannot make one mistake. Ever. This is a highly unusual thing in motorsport, let alone motorcycle road racing. We ALWAYS fall off these things eventually. On the real roads, if you fall off, you're going to get damaged. This changes everything.

But the reward for the added risk is the walls are not pulled far away past long lengthy gravel traps. You sometimes scrape the walls with your arms, shoulders, back, and even helmet. True story. The sensation of speed is so much greater because you whisk by these unmovable objects so close, and often at higher rates of speeds than at normal short circuits.

Last year I did an article for Sport Rider Magazine which took me to the new and lovely Portimao Circuit in the South of Portugal. It was the first time in some years that I had ridden on a proper short circuit since racing the Isle of Man TT, Northwest 200 in Northern Ireland, and Macau. I also ride on the canyon roads of Southern California near daily.

I threw a leg over a new R1 at Portimao and off I went. And what a joke. Guys and gals, road racing motorcycles on short circuit race tracks is not a dangerous sport in the least. You might as well be playing Poker for a living on TV. You can't get hurt on a wide safe smooth awesome circuit like in Portugal. No chance no way.

Sure, you might highside and break your collar bone or get hit by your bike and lose a spleen but I'm telling you, compared to the like of 200+ mph straights at the TT or threading the armco through Mandarin Bend at Macau at 170mph topped out in 5th gear, Portimao felt like diving into swimming pool.

Clean, clear, smooth, no walls, nice curbs, traction, visability, and run-off. Out of the pits I eased my knee down into the very first corner and for the rest of the day I was throwing the thing down, full lean, opening the throttle full-stop at the apex and just sliding the shit out of the Michelin DOT tyre all the way to the next corner, wheeling and grinning. It was so safe I couldn't believe it. You can't hurt yourself, there's nothing to hit!

I must admit, although a different and very cool game in and of itself, a very precise exercise of perfect lines and later braking quickly became monotonous again. The same 15 corners over and over again, it felt like hanging out at Malibu Grand Prix when you almost instantly become the fastest driver in the place, which gives you a shot of ego boost only to then turn into a monkey doing a trick. Around and around you go, turning lap times fast enough that afford you additional free laps, then you just get bored. Short circuit riding has become that to me.

On the real roads, like the [Isle of Man] TT, one lap has over 220 corners PER LAP with a track record of 131mph average speed. Portimao has an average of, I think, 107mph. 2.9 miles in length, bike track record sits at 1:43 something. The TT lap also takes nearly 18 minutes per lap to complete.

It's unfair, I agree, to say flatly that the real roads are the only way to go, they are certainly not. But, they do offer a unique challenge over short circuits in that you cannot make mistakes, the races are much longer. The two Superbike races at the TT are nearly 2 hours long with two pit stops just like the Daytona 200, and the bikes are setup quite differently in order to be able to get airborne at 150mph. So, the bikes are at times more like wet noodles because of the compromise of bumpy versus turning well in the tighter corners, etc.

DL: Both the Isle of Man TT and the Macau GP have been called "the world's most dangerous motorcycle race". Which one gets your vote and why?

MM: Macau is a walk in the park compared to the TT. The TT is the most dangerous real roads circuit because it's lined with trees and cliffs and pubs. At Macau there are walls surrounding the whole circuit, so if you were to fall you'd ricochet off and at least they'd be able to say, "Well, there he is. There's the body and there's the bike." At the Isle of Man I don't even want to think about what some of the fallen men might have come out looking like when you wrap your body around the leading edge of a cobble stone parapet.

I fell off my bike last year at the TT, my first time crashing in four years, right near the end of the whole two weeks of practicing, qualifying, and racing (They call it a "fortnight" in England.. means 'two weeks'). I crested this ridge at maybe 100mph and my bike tankslapped from underneath me. I just missed hitting a telephone pole with my body but my bike hit it right next to me and broke into four large pieces: frame and engine, forks and front wheel, swing arm and rear wheel, body work and tank.

Every bike I saw that crashed at the TT in the past four years looked exactly the same as mine. Every rider but my lucky ass that I know of, went to the hospital with at least broken bones. I can name about eight riders right now that I know who got broken up after they simply fell off at the TT. I have four friends who have died there, now, as well.

At Portimao, forget about it.

DL: You also took part in the first ever TTXGP this year, how'd you like it?

MM: That was really cool! Michael Czysz brought the most extraordinary prototype electric racebike who's chassis was carbon-fiber, and the like. Yes, it broke in the race but its just the beginning. It has the strangest feel with no vibration or noise, other than that of a large drill. We're going to try and win the thing thing in the TTZero race held at the TT. It's a one lap race.

DL: Do you think electric motorcycles have a place in the future of road racing?

MM: Absolutely. It won't be long before a future generation will look back on these times with envy as the Wild Wild West, racing fire-breathing smelly environmentally unhealthy monsters being raced at 200mph on public roads. They'll say, I guarantee it, "I wish I lived back then, when men were men and motorcycle road racing bikes were like rocket ships, not like these pussy-things we're allowed to ride safely these days." And, it'll be true.

DL: What are your racing plans for next year and beyond?

MM: I am racing the TT in Superbike for a Suzuki Great Britain-backed effort and a factory-backed BMW S1000 RR in the TT Superstock class.

I'm also likely racing the Northwest 200 in Northern Ireland and the Horice Czech republic real road races prior to the TT, and the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix for my 8th or 9th time.

DL: Thanks for your time Mark! Anything you want to say to your fans?

AMA Superbike racer Skip Salenius talks about his weekend at the AMA season opener of Daytona in his first CornerSpeedPhoto column. Be sure to check back here to follow Skip's progress as he contests a nearly full season in 2010 on the No. 63 Run 1 Racing Motorsports Team Yamaha R1.

Let me start off by saying that Daytona is not a very fun place on a tankslappin' 180mph GSX-R1000. That being said, I guess just making the grid at 107% was a feat in itself. I'm suppose to be on a new R1, which is actually in my garage right now. It's just not ready yet and I didn't get it in time for Daytona. So... not having a bike to ride wasn't an option. Thanks to a good friend of mine, Andy, for going out and picking up a streetbike for me to build for Daytona. I already had all the parts to bolt on the Gsxr. So, that was the quickest way to get a bike prepped in 3 to 4 weeks.

Wednesday morning's 30 minute practice was literally the first time I threw a leg over that GSX-R1000. Everything was off! Gearing, suspension, my head. I hadn't ridden a race bike in 3 months, only dirt. I had another 1 hour session later in the afternoon to try to figure a few things out. Not! Just as I was about to roll out of the garage, I put the bike in gear and... Nothing. Bike cut off. Realized it was some kind of a clutch issue. I had changed the gearing after the first session and while I had the clutch plate off the side of the countershaft sprocket, someone had grabbed my clutch lever and sent air down my hydraulic clutch. I ended up missing the only full session before qualifying. Bummed!

First qualifying was early Thursday morning, a 30 minute warm up. The bike was still not right. It was just shaking down every straightaway. Not fun. I managed to run a decent enough time, somehow, to put me in the show. With final qualifying still needing to be run at lunch, I knew I'd have to drop a little more time to make the show. The bike was still a mess. After trying more things with the bike, I went out for final qualifying. I made the show by the skin of my teeth. The race was ok for a couple laps. The way the bike was tankslapping in the draft, going down the straightaways, it was impossible to hold on to the throttle wide open so I lost the draft. The race was boring from there, I was just holding on. After the race I tore the bike completly apart. A frame and a motor.

Friday morning I got to the track and proceeded to rebuild my bike for the morning warmup at 11:45. I was really hoping I had addressed the problem. Not! I tried everything. My suspension guy, Lenny Albin, from Race Tech had done all kinds of stuff to try to accommodate my bike's handling woes. I thought it was my steering damper. I still think that was part of the issue. I had pretty much settled that race 2 on Friday afternoon, I was just gonna try to survive. Nothing I seemed to do could get my bike to go straight, very frustrating. I held onto the guys in the back for a minute, then proceeded to run off the track on lap 2 or 3 and lost touch. Another lonely race at the back which is somewhere I won't be again this season.

I'd really like to thank Monty Spears of Run 1 Racing for getting me to Daytona and VooDoo Racing for the bike. I'm ready to get on the R1! It's being prepped now and I should have it ready for Road Atlanta in April. See ya'll there!

World Superbike gets a brief mention in the current issue of Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine in the "Calendar" section. Just a partial column with a small photo and at one point they referred to it as "the World Superbike" but hey we'll take it.

Attention, adrenaline junkies: The FIM HANNspree Superbike World Championship makes its only stop this side of the Prime Meridian at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, about 35 miles from Salt Lake City. Billed as the world's most competitive motorcycle racing series, the event pits daredevils against each other at speeds of up to 200 mph. In addition to the superbike championship, Miller Motorsports Park also hosts many of the most significant racing series on the planet, including the American Le Mans Series, Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, NASCAR K and N Pro Series, and the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. The championship weekend features three races, all held on the 31st: two races for the World Superbike and one for the World Supersport. Riders in the Superbike and Supersport World Championships use modified factory bikes by Yamaha, Ducati, Honda, BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Aprilia. That makes it a fan favorite, since people in the grandstands can see motorcycles they might actually own pushed to the limit by pro riders.

World Superbike: Phillip Island Race 1

Nori Haga was rear-ended by Ruben Xaus during morning warmup that left Haga with arm-pump and Xaus unable to start. Roland Resch was also unable to start due to a broken collarbone sustained from yesterday's Q2 accident. Both MotoGP refugees James Toseland and Chris Vermeulen as well as World Supersport graduate Cal Crutchlow crased out of the race. Michel Fabrizio nearly pipped Leon Haslam at the finish line, losing out by just 0.004s to give Haslam his maiden World Superbike win.
