Daytona Sportbike
Points leader Martin Cardenas was first to go, crashing out of the lead early in the race. Not too long afterwards a 3-rider pile up at the corkscrew red flagged the race, resulting in a lengthy break in track activity. Other mishaps included Roger Hayden ducking out early with a mystery problem, Josh Hayes taking a trip into the gravel, and a podium-paced Jake Zemke hit with an engine failure. Ben Bostrom would eventually emerge victorious after all the carnage and has now gone 2 for 2 on the R6 this season with Chaz Davies coming in 2nd to score his first podium with the Aprilia RSV1000R. The final podium spot went to an extra patriotic Josh Herrin.

American Superbike

The American Superbike race started with Tommy Hayden blasting off by himself, stopped just short of the crest, and turned around while the rest of the grid stayed relatively motionless. As they were waiting for Tommy to get re-situated everyone was sent off on a second warm-up lap, thus suggesting that the race has never officially started. The "restarted" race only managed to stay drama-free through 1 turn when Ben Bostrom crashed at turn 2 and collected Larry Pegram and Neil Hodgson along with him. The rest of the grid continued to circulate the track at speed, completely unaware that a "safety" car had been dispatched in response to the turn 2 incident until the leaders nearly rear-ended it coming over the hill at the start of the next lap. Amazing, no one collided with the huge reportedly stationary 4-wheeled obstacle or with each other, certainly a testament to the high level of skill of the riders and not so much the competence of race officials. Needless to say this race got red flagged too, with more controversy to follow. Of the 3 crashed riders, only Ben Bostrom and Neil Hodgson were able to get their bikes repaired and resumed the now 18-lap race in their original starting positions. Larry Pegram was not so lucky and was forced to restart the race on a backup bike, and consequently, at the back of the grid. But wait, wasn't the crash Ben's fault, meaning he should restart at the back too? Nope. Thanks to another brilliant judgement call, the official reason for the red flag was, you guessed it, the safety car. Meanwhile, Tommy Hayden was penalized for the jumpstart that occurred during a race start that technically never happened. Wut?
